Desde 2001, fecha en la que se produjo la lluvia roja en Kerala (India), el hallazgo desconcertó a la población, ya que nunca anteriormente se había reportado un evento así. De hecho la lluvia resultaba semejante al plasma sanguíneo, lo que motivó a los científicos de varias universidades británicas, tales como Cardiff, Sheffield y por supuesto la Universidad de Cochin en la India, a analizar las muestras obtenidas en Kerala para conocer exactamente su composición orígen y entender el extraño fenómeno.
Fue el Dr. Godfrey Louis, quién con un equipo de científicos multidisciplinares, entre los que podemos citar: Rajkumar Gangappa ,Chandra Wickramasinghe ,Milton Wainwright y A. Santhosh Kumar, asumieron la misión de probar uno de los retos más importantes de la astrobiología: La existencia de Vida extraterrestre bacteriológica y su capacidad para proliferar en entornos extremos.
La denominada bacteria extraterrestre o célula roja conoció así por primera vez la luz en la comunidad científica, lo que motivó el correspondiente estudio de proliferación a temperaturas extremas. La cuestión trataba de verificar la existencia de vida en el espacio y su precipitación en la Tierra. Ciertamente este tipo de organismos se denominan hipertermófilas por su capacidad de proliferar en entornos extremos, con temperaturas elevadas superiores a los 121ºCelsius.
Desde 2003 a 2010, diversos estudios analizaron la célula roja, llegando a las mismas conclusiones que en el primer paper de 2003: Es decir, su más que probable orígen extraterrestre, ya que para que se produzca su proliferación, es necesario que las temperaturas exteriores sen extremádamente calurosas, es decir por encima de 121º.
La procedencia de las células rojas es con casi toda probabilidad extraterrestre, tal fue y sigue siendo la postura del equipo compuesto por Dr. Godfrey Louis y su equipo, tras raelizar toda una serie de ensayos y pruebas conducentes a conocer su contexto (hábitat) y su capacidad de reproducción y comportamiento en aislamiento.
En: "Growth and replication of red rain cells at 121ºC and their red fluorescence" (arXiv:1008.4960) se plantean las conclusiones del estudio, en las que podemos leer literalmente:
We have shown that the red cells found in the Red Rain (which fell on Kerala, India, in 2001) survive and grow after incubation for periods of up to two hours at 121 oC . Under these conditions daughter cells appear within the original mother cells and the number of cells in the samples increases with length of exposure to 121 oC. No such increase in cells occurs at room temperature, suggesting that the increase in daughter cells is brought about by exposure of the Red Rain cells to high temperatures. This is an independent confirmation of results reported earlier by two of the present authors, claiming that the cells can replicate under high pressure at temperatures up to 300 oC. The flourescence behaviour of the red cells is shown to be in remarkable correspondence with the extended red emission observed in the Red Rectangle planetary nebula and other galactic and extragalactic dust clouds, suggesting, though not proving, an extraterrestrial origin.
Dicho de otra forma: Si se verificara la prueba de replicación a temperatura de 300º, se habría probado la existencia de la primera bacteria extraterrestre, ya que no pueden reproducirse esas condiciones térmicas en ningún punto de la Tierra.
Tal es la importancia del hallazgo que actualmente constituye una de las líneas maestras de investigación en el marco de la astrobiología y en general la exociencia.
Entre los resultados del estudio, destacamos aquí el diagrama obtenido de reproducción en condiciones de aislamiento a 121º de temperatura, experimento que en el futuro se tendrá que volver a verificar a más de 300º C para que los resultados sean del todo concluyentes.
